Scott Goldfarb Week 15

Review the genealogy of arts and community engagement.  What changed about your understanding of community-based arts after reviewing this genealogy? What questions emerged for you? What new connections became clear? Post your writing on our class blog.

One thing that changed my understanding of community based arts is in relation the Serra tilted wall project. There is an assumption that the artists is the director, the god, etc. and that they should have final say. However, in the project with Serra its made unequivocally clear that this is not true, as public arts should include the very consumers in their own creative process.

One thing that has been made clear to me is the difference between site and space. I now understand that sites are a useful tool, in comparison to places which have value and contextual meaning. However, with this in mind I am still struggling to put the terms into a real life context, as I do not understand what a place specific project would be, and how that would tie into community engagement.

Some questions that I had after reviewing the slideshow:
How does Art Util be time specific, but also maintain its impact after the time specific event is addressed?
I am curious as to how Guy Debord would react today, where we live in a world that is hyper saturated with advertisements and ploys to sell things

Issues that have been impacting my life and the ones around me mainly revolve around environmental issues. One of the pressing issues that affects the agriculture community in California is the State’s distribution of water. The south is in need of water as they do not get enough to support themselves, but the issue is a bit larger and encompuses the states refusal to create more reservoirs to store water to be used during the dryer months. But the main issue is that the focus is uneven and falls heavily on the side of sending it to the south instead of distributing it evenly so farmers in all regions but mainly central and southern california have the proper amount of water to grow their crops. California is one of the leading states in the production and exporting of agriculture products due to our vast and wide scale of geological environments, but ...
