ashley sanchez: week 11

3 key takeaways in connection to arts and community engagement based on the work of our guest Fabian Debora.

  1. Hearing how important the foundation of family was and is for him. He spoke of how he was never a perfect father, son and or partner. He actually caused his family and loved ones a lot of pain but once he was able to break his cycle of addiction he strived towards no longer making promises and simply getting the help he needed in order to rebuild his familial foundations.

  1. The power of  symbolism. He spoke of it when he described almost being crushed by a truck and landing on a center divider where he sat and witnessed powerful rays of sun dancing just moments after this almost horrific catastrophe. That he was filled with feelings of peace, joy, happiness and serenity. “The feelings that could only come from something much more greater. In this case, my God.” I was moved by his connection to spirituality and how that ends up translating symbolically in the naming of his academy, “Somos LA Arte". Somos,  which translates to “we are” is a powerful declaration of not only culture but community.

  1. As he shared his story with us, I never noticed the words mounted on the wall behind him which read, “justice”. When watching his interview back, this word seemed as if it were almost shining and I couldn’t believe that I hadn’t seen it the first time around. Just recognizing this word and allowing it to evoke any images, themes or memories was something I’m  thankful I was able to recognize while re-visiting his story.

Issues that have been impacting my life and the ones around me mainly revolve around environmental issues. One of the pressing issues that affects the agriculture community in California is the State’s distribution of water. Now a tactic that the State Government has had for many years is to take water from Northern California and send it down to the South. The south is in need of water as they do not get enough to support themselves, but the issue is a bit larger and encompuses the states refusal to create more reservoirs to store water to be used during the dryer months. But the main issue is that the focus is uneven and falls heavily on the side of sending it to the south instead of distributing it evenly so farmers in all regions but mainly central and southern california have the proper amount of water to grow their crops. California is one of the leading states in the production and exporting of agriculture products due to our vast and wide scale of geological environments, but ...
