Reflect on 3 key takeaways in connection to arts and community engagement based on the work of our guest Fabian Debora. Post your reflections on our blog.
1. Being a member of the community you are trying to engage with is very important. It seems like today there are millions of different perspectives and worldview that lead to very different understandings of the human experience. When trying to talk with a member of one community and share your ideas, it is essential that you yourself align your perspectives and worldview with that of their own so that you can have a shared understanding. Without that, it seems as though ideas are more difficult to explain.
2. I was moved by hearing how important family is to Debora. It seems to be a central point in the bulk of his work, and a means of grounding himself. Which I can see as being an important aspect in community engagement as having a strong sense of family is having a strong sense of (potentially) your community that you are a part of. Knowing your community helps you know where you are coming from when working outside of it.
3. While this can be seen in the same vein as the first point, one of my takeaways from Debora was that vulnerability is crucial to community engagement. The act of being vulnerable seems to have opened doors and lowered barriers for him, in turn letting Debora reach further audiences that he normally wouldn't be able to engage with. Also, the act of being vulnerable lets us understand someone from a different community better, rather than just showing up and trying to spout off your ideas.
