What's on my mind...
Libraries
Immediately when I think of what I'm passionate about in my community I think about how vital public libraries are. Growing up I spent a lot of time in a public library near my childhood home. My mom would often bring me to free events that were catered toward the youth while she, a part time college student, studied in the private rooms. I'm a natural introvert, so I appreciated having time spent in a place that's meant to be quiet. I fostered my love for reading, and discovered many genres and topics I would have never otherwise come across.
Libraries are more important than just the books they hold and the atmosphere. Most offer computers, internet, and free printing to the community, including the homeless. Libraries are places of community built by the sharing of information. My local library offers free classes, book and movie clubs, language learning-software, and free programing for children of all ages.
Female Empowerment
Female empowerment and positive representation is extremely important to me. I would not be where I am in life, at CalArts or even pursuing my dreams if I didn't have the role models I had growing up. I looked up to female heroes and was shocked when I learned that most of the rest of the world were looking only up at the male heroes. Seeing girls like the team in Sailor Moon fighting crime and standing up for themselves and the rest of the world inspired me to be like them. I think feeling empowered as a young girl can make someone feel empowered throughout their whole life.
Arts Education
I will forever be grateful to my family for supporting me when I was a child in my pursuit of theatre. I often wonder what my life would have been like if they weren't able to support me in the ways that they did. When I was a senior in high school, I asked my dean if she could help me figure out how to get into an acting conservatory. She told me she couldn't help me. I had to seek out information on art schools by myself. I couldn't even ask our drama teacher for help with my audition, because the theatre club was run by the choir director, who had no experience in acting or theatrical direction. I was able to find workshops in New York for college audition prep, and I hired acting coaches from the Guthrie to help me with my monologues. Because my school didn't offer any guidance for me, or other students looking to go into the arts. If my family wasn't able to financially support me seeking out coaching for audition, I doubt I'd have made it into CalArts. I wish there was a way for me to prove to my old community how important theatre and arts education is. I think that every school should have a counselor or dean who has a grasp on higher education for the arts.
