Leighton Holritz - What's On Your Mind/Toolkit - Week 3 Assignment

*
What's On Your Mind:
Many of the grievances I have with the world are minor inconveniences, or ones that I know I cannot, as a single human, really do much to enact change against. Lately I've been attempting to change my lifestyle towards the use of natural materials in hopes of using pre existing objects to make new things (ie clothes... except for a few things, I have been buying natural fibre clothing and fabric from thrift and charity shops and altering them to create new garments). Perhaps as a project I could lead a discussion on the benefits to our planet and everyday life of using pre existing materials as opposed to simply buying something new that can be easily mended or replaced without the need for the creation of something new.
(I know this isn't three options, but this is the best I could come up with at the moment. I'm not one to speak out of turn against government policies I find obscene, and I do not truly believe myself capable of even contributing something useful to the homelessness problem of LA - so I stuck with something small that I know I can relate with, that I can effect a small amount of change on, and that I know I can maybe change one mind about.)

Toolkit:
I find the Yes Men absolutely hilarious - I first heard about them in high school when my history teacher played one of their television stunts for us without any context. Those of us who didn't know who they were were perplexed (I don't remember which one it was... I think it may have had to do with an oil spill or child labour) and amused with the way in which the supposed government and company employees were reacting to the situation. Since then I have not sought out their stunts, but every once in a while I see something new that they have done in the news and I always find it humorous. In recently exploring their official website, I found it very interesting that they have an enormous section dedicated as a How To guide to mimic what they do. They give pros and cons to standing up for your beliefs and sticking it to the man, and are very candid about the possibility of financial trouble or jail time due to their actions. They list many different ways in which they like to fight oppressive policies through jokes and hijinx, and how to cleverly play towards a camera  and force the media to pay attention to what they have to say. I think their website is extremely informative, and I would love to someday go through and read about all of their dealings with the press and government.
