I think the artists in The Roof is On Fire truly created a safe space for young people and this probably energized people to participate. If I were to hear of this event, I would feel comfortable because I’ve had many talks in parked cars discussing important issues. Some other political spheres like town halls or rallies can intimidate me and make me feel like I don’t belong. I think the most important element is that the voyeurs do not engage with the students. As a young person and as a woman, I often feel like my elders or men will step in to tell me how I’m wrong. I know I don’t have as much life experience, but some of these issues have more relevance in my life than others and no matter what I believe at the very least opinions should be respected and not interrupted. I think this project helped to elevate these people beyond stereotypes that others condemn them to and I do hope it changed some people’s minds.
Issues that have been impacting my life and the ones around me mainly revolve around environmental issues. One of the pressing issues that affects the agriculture community in California is the State’s distribution of water. Now a tactic that the State Government has had for many years is to take water from Northern California and send it down to the South. The south is in need of water as they do not get enough to support themselves, but the issue is a bit larger and encompuses the states refusal to create more reservoirs to store water to be used during the dryer months. But the main issue is that the focus is uneven and falls heavily on the side of sending it to the south instead of distributing it evenly so farmers in all regions but mainly central and southern california have the proper amount of water to grow their crops.
