Banjo Kim - What’s on your mind? - Week 3 Assignment
  • Racism
    • Coronavirus is going around and I’ve been seeing a lot of racism going around. People are going around and using coronavirus as an excuse to be racist. I am concerned because uneducated people are causing unnecessary harm.
  • Climate change
    • I am passionate about this topic because the world we live in is rapidly deteriorating.  I feel as if there is a lot of talk about climate change but no one is doing anything.
  • Gentrification
    • I believe that artist and gentrification go hand in hand. Gentrification is an issue that is happening all over the world, but I would like to focus in the LA area.

The article that I read was Pillars of support from the Beautiful Trouble Toolbox. A strategy that resonated with me was that the power rests in the hand of the people. The article talks about these ‘pillars of support’. Some examples for these pillars are the military, police, media, etc. These pillars claim a lot of power in today's society. But when people choose to no longer “accept the status quo and resist”, there is a shift in power. The people do not have to be unarmed to create change. The only thing people need to do is participate and work together. An information that was entirely new to me was the five year national boycott of grapes led by Cesar Chavez. I did not know that farm workers were exploited. An idea that is worth digging further into is the idea that most people are ignorant of the power they wield. This idea interested me because I believe that this does not apply to everyone. I would want a better understanding of the percentage of people who believe that they don’t have the power to create change.

Issues that have been impacting my life and the ones around me mainly revolve around environmental issues. One of the pressing issues that affects the agriculture community in California is the State’s distribution of water. Now a tactic that the State Government has had for many years is to take water from Northern California and send it down to the South. The south is in need of water as they do not get enough to support themselves, but the issue is a bit larger and encompuses the states refusal to create more reservoirs to store water to be used during the dryer months. But the main issue is that the focus is uneven and falls heavily on the side of sending it to the south instead of distributing it evenly so farmers in all regions but mainly central and southern california have the proper amount of water to grow their crops. California is one of the leading states in the production and exporting of agriculture products due to our vast and wide scale of geological environments, but ...
