Some community engagement strategies that the artist Suzanne Lacy and her collaborates utilized in this 10 year project are allowing high school students to have an unscripted conversation. These students were given a voice and were finally able to be heard by the media. The students were given a list of topic, but there was no script so students were able to say whatever was on their mind. Having an unscripted conversation between the public high school students allowed the students to have an open mind and talk about any topics that were on their mind. This strategy incorporated ‘putting’ ideas on the tables. Without having a certain agenda to talk about, students were given freedom to talk about whatever topics came to mind. Cars were parked at a rooftop garage and this strategy allowed for the students to create a spirit of inquiry and paying attention to self and others. Having multiple cars created many spaces were students can join and converse with one another. Because each space created a small and intimate area, it allowed the students to be in a safe space where they could be heard and where no one would be left out. I believe that these strategies were effective because this project flawlessly incorporated the 7 norms of collaboration. The 7 norms of collaboration are promoting a spirit of inquiry, pausing, paraphrasing, probing for specificity, putting ideas on the table, paying attention to self and others, and presuming food positive intentions.
Issues that have been impacting my life and the ones around me mainly revolve around environmental issues. Now a tactic that the State Government has had for many years is to take water from Northern California and send it down to the South. The south is in need of water as they do not get enough to support themselves, but the issue is a bit larger and encompuses the states refusal to create more reservoirs to store water to be used during the dryer months. But the main issue is that the focus is uneven and falls heavily on the side of sending it to the south instead of distributing it evenly so farmers in all regions but mainly central and southern california have the proper amount of water to grow their crops. California is one of the leading states in the production and exporting of agriculture products due to our vast and wide scale of geological environments, but ...
