Assignment: The Roof Is On Fire

The roof is on fire incorporates a multitude of community outreach strategies. The most obvious one it uses is elevating the voices of those less heard. Often community outreach focuses on letting unheard voices be heard and that is entirely the focus of this piece. I think in the context of this performance there is a lot of potential for this to be successful in spreading the communities concerns. I do think however that it might not be functioning exactly how the directors or performers think it is. The people who really should be engaging with this piece are not the people who are likely attending it. I’m sure that the people who really need to be exposed to the voices of these kids are entirely unaware of the performance. It’s difficult to reach those people as they live in completely different worlds, and I wonder what techniques can you incorporate to attempt to reach those kinds of people.
