White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsac

Reading this really kinda triggered me at first. The first thoughts in my head are about how I don’t do that and that I am not a part of the problem but this reminded me of the conversation we had in class last week about how white people distance ourselves from the problem instead of acknowledging it. Even then I think I might be stating that wrong. I'm very happy that I go to a school where a reading like this is presented to the students to read because I would never have sought this out on my own. I knew of some of the findings in the text but not all of them. I had to read the 50 findings on the Daily Effects of White Privilege and then write it down to really absorb the information properly. One of the findings that really stood out to me was “I can take a job with an affirmative action employer without having my co-workers on the job suspect that I got it because of my race.” I never thought about this situation and really affected my world view on a lot of hiring practices. Maybe it isn’t as relevant in concert lighting design because there are so few of us and there aren't affirmative action employers. But how does this apply to actors or just general hiring for normal jobs? I have no idea what information might be missing because almost all of it is new to me.

Climate change
We as a species have known that climate change is happening for many years now and still have not made any concrete steps toward making a real difference in the grand scheme of things. We have already caused irreversible damage to the planet and have made hundreds of species go extinct. I am taking 2 classes revolving around environmental justice and science and has just made me extremely depressed about the future and has also reinforced the mindset I have of not bringing kids into this shitty world.

Overpopulation/People are bad
The whole reason climate change has happened is because there are too many people on the planet and that humans are just naturally “evil”. When there was less of us the effects of humans being evil were mitigated but now that the population is at 7,765,775 (as of Thursday February 20th, 2020 at 1:53pm) the harm we do is being magnified.

Art is no longer original
One thing that I do think about quite often is how to make original work in lighting. There are only so many ways to do things and how much “inspiration” can I take from another show without it being stolen? We are all taught here at CalArts to be individually creative and such but also leave here designing very similarly. What are ways to combat that but also use it to our advantage?

Issues that have been impacting my life and the ones around me mainly revolve around environmental issues. One of the pressing issues that affects the agriculture community in California is the State’s distribution of water. Now a tactic that the State Government has had for many years is to take water from Northern California and send it down to the South. The south is in need of water as they do not get enough to support themselves, but the issue is a bit larger and encompuses the states refusal to create more reservoirs to store water to be used during the dryer months. But the main issue is that the focus is uneven and falls heavily on the side of sending it to the south instead of distributing it evenly so farmers in all regions but mainly central and southern california have the proper amount of water to grow their crops. California is one of the leading states in the production and exporting of agriculture products due to our vast and wide scale of geological environments, but ...
